In Room 4 children direct their own learning throughout the day. The focus is on the Key Competencies from the NZ Curriculum. These are: thinking, using language symbols and texts, managing self, relating to others and participating and contributing. I encourage the children to collaborate with each other, while persevering to complete activities they are working on. Throughout each day I teach reading, writing and maths in small groups while their self-directed play covers the curriculum areas of technology, science, social science, arts, and physical education and health. I foster a creative and caring environment where children can transition from the New Entrant class, with whom we often share a learning space. In room 4 children will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own belongings, this includes, clothing, reading, library bags and notices – etc.
